Basic Computer Troubleshooting Tips

Most of the times when there’s a problem in the computer we are reluctant to check it even at its basic levels of troubleshooting . But give an answer if you don’t try a hand once how will you learn something new of the system you work everyday. Although we have annual maintenance contract, but its advisable to troubleshoot the system at the basic levels on your own. Lets Start!!

How do you react when you face problems with your well working computer suddenly? Do you show a peevish attitude by kicking the CPU or strive to find the problem that what is happening or you can identify the area of problem so that you can explain it to your technician and save extra bugs. With some basic troubleshooting techniques you can be more confident with your system and the technician who visits your site.

The most common problem is system crash i.e. hard disk crash or hardware crash. In such cases it’s a sagacious advice from the experts to have a restore point or backup in the system as well as other storage device. After having a backup of all the important data, you can feel free from dread of losing it. Follow these basic troubleshooting steps to restore your computer in working order again.

Commence your troubleshooting by inspecting the minor problems such as loose cable, power shortage, etc. If all the wires are plugged in properly then check your electric output board by plugging in some other device cable into it. If you have got an extra cable i.e. in case there are multiple computers, try changing cable. Reason being early morning my monitor automatically switched off. I checked whether the connections were upright. Also I checked the electric output point, still the problem persisted. Then I pulled out the cable from my another system in the network and check it by changing the cable. Guess what!! It was working absolutely fine. Now I purchased the cable for just $1 and saved $20 that my technician demanded as a service charge.

Now if your problem still persists you need to perform basic hardware troubleshooting.

  1. When the computer starts check the power supply fan if its working or not.
  2. The keyword light above or near num lock should flash.
  3. The computer screen must show the BIOS message.
  4. Memory test must appear on the screen.
  5. Floppy disk or CD Drive light should flash momentarily.
  6. Hard Drive light should also flash.
  7. System should make a beeping sound once initialization process completes.
  8. CD Drive light should flash again before control moves to the hard drive.
  9. Now the windows message with a moving scroller must be seen in the screen.

Now based on the observation of the above steps we can determine the problem.Suppose, if the keyboard light does not glow then the problem lies b/w keyboard and computer. In case during booting BIOS message is not displayed then the problem might be with BIOS in the motherboard. In this way you can be a smart computer user who does basic hardware troubleshooting on their own and although you can’t fix the problem but you are well aware of the problem while talking to a computer technician to tell them the problem you have identified. Hence saving your money as well as time wasted during the spotting of the problem.

Bonus Tip: Most of the times computer crashes as a result of the recent changes made to the system i.e. software installations like free anti-virus, pc game, password-protection software, or any alien application. In such cases you can start the computer in Safe Mode and undo the recent changes made to the computer and find the problem.

So next time if you have any problem with your computer perform the basic computer troubleshooting on your own performing the tricks revealed above and be a smart computer user.
