What is Email Server?

Email Server is an application program that receives incoming email from the local as well as remote senders and delivers the outgoing mail to the desired destination as configured. It is also known as Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) or Mail Transport Agent, Email Router or Internet Mailer. When a computer is entirely dedicated to such application, it is called Mail Server.

For example: Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Exim, Sendmail, etc.

            Email Server works when combined with other program, it can be called as Messaging System. Generally as a standard such systems use SMTP and ESMTP for sending the email and POP3 or IMAP for receiving email.
